Installing Ubuntu on Dell PowerEdge or Precision with LSI SAS1068 RAID controller (HBA-PERC/5)

The problem

Ubuntu install fails with:

• can't access tty
• (initramfs)[92.774110] ata?: port failed to respond (30 secs, Status 0xd0)

The solution

Install from the alternate image, in text mode:

• Download Ubuntu Server Edition 64bit AMD and Intel computers
  • Server edition: Ubuntu 7.04 (Feisty Fawn)
  • 64bit AMD and Intel computers
  • Select a mirror
  • Check here if you need the alternate desktop CD (we'll do text-based install)
  • The file name will be: ubuntu-7.04-alternate-amd64.iso
• Select "install" and follow instructions
