Seating Protocol for Future Vacated Seats (due to Graduation)

When seats are vacated, the LCSR will announce in an e-mail that a new seat is available (by seat number). A meeting will be called to fill that seat. Seating priority will be assigned with seniority. NOTE: If anyone chooses to fill the vacant seat (oooh, that seat is by the window and I love to daydream as to what the clouds might be made of...marshmallows? childhood dreams we lost long ago? water vapor?), his/her seat will now be vacant and that seat will be reassigned during the SAME MEETING. The meeting will adjourn when a seat is vacant that nobody wants, and that seat will go to a seatless graduate student. SO IF YOU HAVE ANY DESIRE TO CHANGE SEATS (even if you have seasonal allergies and don't want a window seat), ATTEND THIS MEETING.

New Student Seating Priorities

The following priority list for seating was agreed to by the Committee on 05/24/07 by a 100% yea vote.

[P] 1. current PhD students
[P] 2. LCSR Master's students turned PhD students
[P] 3. new incoming PhD students
[NP] 4. current LCSR funded Master's students
[NP] 5. visiting / other Master's / undergraduate students (will be determined by length of time person will stay in LCSR)

P = permanent seat. Once that student is given that seat, he/she has rights to that seat until his/her respective graduation.

NP = non-permanent seat. If a person that is higher on the priority list arrives, an NP seat can be subject to removal for the higher priority student. NOTE: this can only occur at the end of each semester.

Committee Voting

Lottery Rule - May 25, 2007 - Proposed by Netta

In the lottery for incoming new PhD students, each lab should only be allowed at most one new seat, until all labs with new students have been allocated a seat. For example, if Hager lab has two new students, Bob and Mary, and Mary gets a vacant seat with lottery pick 1, Bob cannot get a seat until all other labs with new students has been given 1 seat per lab.
