Policy and protocol is determined by CISST ERC Leadership and JHU Audit Departments who provide guidance on laboratory procedure and policy. The Lab Manager monitors changes to relevant policy (i.e. within the scope of lab maintenance) by updating forms and materials and enforcing policy regarding lab safety. The lab management policies and protocol assembled here include but are not limited to the forms, documents, and descriptions of Expenditure Requests, Audit Materials, Lab Meeting Materials, General Permission Forms, Radiation Safety Protocol, Shop Related Maintenance Materials, and Site Visit Checklists.

JHU Office of Radiation Safety (Homewood)

In order to ensure that the use of ionizing radiation for research at this university does not result in the unnecessary exposure to individuals and to the general public, Johns Hopkins University maintains a Radiation Safety Office on the Homewood Campus. This office is also responsible for monitoring and enforcing compliance with all applicable state and federal regulations concerning the use and handling of radionuclides and other sources of ionizing radiation, including analytical x-ray machines and electron microscopes.

JHU Export Control Policy

Members of the research community at Johns Hopkins University are expected to comply with export control laws that govern information involving various technologies that could have a major impact on their projects. The University recognizes Export Administration Regulations (EAR) govern the conditions under which certain information, technologies, and commodities can be transmitted outside of the United States to anyone, including citizens of the United States, or to a foreign national in the United States and it upholds this set of laws.

Maryland SSN Privacy Law

Maryland law prohibits a person, including a public or private entity, from intentionally communicating or otherwise making available to the public the Social Security number of another; prohibiting a person, from printing the Social Security number of another on a card required for the other person to access products or services; prohibiting a person from requiring another to transmit the Social Security number of the other over the Internet, etc. Therefore, reasonable measures to safeguard the privacy of Social Security numbers must be exercised at all times when handling this information (i.e. sealing documents in an unmarked envelope and encrypting all e-mails and electronic file transfers containing Social Security Numbers).

JHU Financial Management Policy

At Johns Hopkins University, superior financial management is imperative in the administration of research projects. This is achieved through the university’s accounting policy and procedures that complies with both federal and non-federal funding sources as well as a number of internal controls.

JHU Office of Health, Safety, and Environment

The Office of Health, Safety, and Environment provides services in the prevention and management of occupational and environmental injuries, illnesses, and disabilities to all members of the research community of Johns Hopkins. Its goal is to ensure Johns Hopkins maintains a quality work environment and is compliant regarding various procedures and appropriate regulations.

Reporting an Invention (JHTT)

To report new intellectual property, a Report of Invention (ROI) must be completed which includes assignment of ownership interest to the University. An ROI provides the necessary information about the intellectual property so JHTT staff can properly evaluate invention disclosures and pursue licensing opportunities.
