Ask a Mac (Tian)
- Tex: Is there a Mac utility for converting from latex to html?
TeX Alternative on Mac: gwTeX and TeXShop (Balazs)
http://ii2.sourceforge.net/tex-index.html
For all the lamers (like me) here's a pretty nice and hassle free TeXing software for Mac.
(Click here to download everything in a neat package: TeX_on_MacOSX.zip)
Installation:
- Install i-Installer (II2.dmg)
- Run i-Installer from Applications/Utilities
- In menu: i-Package >> Known Packages i-Directory
- From any of Germen's i-Directories install the following packages:
- gwTeX based on TeX Live (Basic install)
- gwTeX Support: CB Greek
- gwTeX Support: CM-Super
- gwTeX Support: ConTeXt updater
- gwTeX Support: MusixTeX
- Install TeXShop (texshop.dmg)
- Enjoy!
BibDesk: graphical BibTeX-bibliography manager (Ankur)
http://bibdesk.sourceforge.net/
I have very tough standards for calling something nice.
But this does all the things that you need from a paper managment program, you can annotate papers, write your own abstract, multiple keywords, searches, view original files for the bib entry, put references in latex and etc.
You can even put online papers, that are not on your harddisk, but i wont recommend that because the online urls keep changing, atleast with ieee. plus you have to be online to read them, better keep a local url.
Stoplight: Maximize button instead of Zoom (Csoma)
(Note: I stopped using it since it made many applications unstable.)
http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?showtopic=26597
Here's how to install it:
- If you don't have it yet, download and install SIMBL from http://culater.net/software/SIMBL/SIMBL.php
- Download Stoplight (or get it from here: Stoplight_1.1.zip )
- Drag StoplightHack.bundle into ~/Library/Application Support/SIMBL/Plugins/
- Double-click Stoplight.prefPane.
- Configure as you like on a per-application basis, or exclude certain apps.
Skype and some other application will not work with this utility (exits without any warning), so add them to the exclude list.
Screen Capture (Screen Shots) (Ankur)
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107071
Using the key combination of command-shift-4 (number 4 on the keyboard), one can capture the screen image to a file on the desktop. The image under the crosshair could span multiple widgets with borders and so on or can be contents of single widget.
Services (Ankur)
I am not sure how many are familiar with this wonderful feature in Mac OS X. But a lot of programs start using it and it becomes a mess. Heres a cool app to manage things, allows one to change shortcuts etc.
Here is a page that reviews this software- http://www.macworld.com/weblogs/macgems/2006/01/srvcescrber/index.php
I got my version from- http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/20192
Equations in Keynote (Ankur)
One thing I was looking for a long time, since my switchover to Keynote from PowerPoint on Windows, was a program to typeset equations using latex in ones presentation.
What I wanted was an equivalent to 'TeXPoint' http://texpoint.necula.org/history.html for windows xp, btw it is no longer freeware :((
And I very recently found two, these are
Latex Equation Editor :

Equation Service:
http://www.esm.psu.edu/mac-tex/EquationService/EquationServiceHelp.htm
I am starting to use equationservice and it is awesome, writing equations is so much fun now. It generates a pdf (vector graphics! wow!), and you can add shadows, reflections, and on and on...to your equations in keynote. Your equations never looked any better!!!
