Title: Image Guided Robots for Cancer Research
Presentation slideshow: PDF (1.48MB)

Abstract: This talk will describe two image-guided robot systems that were developed for cancer research with small animals.

The first system consists of a 4-axis robot system that is used to accurately place needles or probes in a set of locations defined in a preoperative image. The initial use is to validate Positron Emission Tomography (PET) as a non-invasive method for locating hypoxic regions in tumors prior to radiation therapy. In this case, the robot inserts an oxygen-sensing probe into tumor locations identified on the preoperative PET image.

The second system is the Small Animal Radiation Research Platform (SARRP), which combines cone-beam CT imaging and radiation therapy in a portable system. This brings the capabilities of modern clinical radiation therapy systems to researchers working with small animals, thereby enabling better translation of research results "from mice to men".
