Abstract

Intraoperative MRI has evolved from an experimental research tool into a complex clinically applied technique that offers significant promise for minimally invasive surgery and interventional radiology. Intraoperative MRI offers the exciting possibilities of improved patient care, reduced invasiveness of surgery and a safer and more efficient execution of existing procedures. At the same time providing unique forms of image guidance may result in the development and implementation of new surgical applications which cannot be performed otherwise. My laboratory team at Brigham and Women�s Hospital is further advancing our research to integrate robots in image-guided therapy and to treatment of moving organs. The primary objective of this presentation is to overview key computer and engineering technologies for MRI-guided therapies of moving organs. Our new target organs are, liver, kidney, and lung which are relatively unchallenged in the Image Guided Therapy due primary to lack of methods to track the motion and compensate the surgical tools to their motion. I will rationalize why surgical CAD/CAM robot is indispensable tool in the image guided therapy of moving organ, and how image processing methods developed in the diagnostic imaging can be translated to our new challenge. I will present methods and technologies in navigation, surgical robots, software engineering, motion tracking, and sensor fusion. Our ultimate goal is develop 'close-loop' therapy where robot, imaging, and treatment control are continuously updated during the therapy to deliver optical treatment.
