Title: Neuromuscular Analysis of Haptic Gas Pedal Feedback during Car Following
Presentation: PDF, not yet uploaded
Abstract and Bio
David Abbink works as a postdoctoral research fellow at Delft University of Technology, where he heads the Delft Haptics Laboratory. He will give a talk today about his PhD research - sponsored by Nissan Motor Company - during which he developed a haptic gas pedal that assists drivers in maintaining a safe separation to a lead vehicle. He analysed the impact of the continuous haptic support system on driver control behaviour; at the level of car-following behaviour, as well as at the level of neuromuscular motion control of the foot on the gas pedal. The main conclusion of the research is that the additional (haptic) feedback about the separation enables drivers to do part of the necessary control actions through fast reflexes, instead of through only visual feedback. As a consequence, drivers can generate the same (or an even better) car following performance with less control effort."
