General Description
The AAPM is recruiting mentors for its 2005 Summer
Undergraduate Fellowship Program. The Program is designed to provide opportunities for undergraduate university students
to gain experience in medical physics by performing research in a medical physics laboratory or assisting with clinical
service at a clinical facility.
The program is aimed at junior and senior undergraduate students, particularly those that will become eligible for
graduate study in medical physics.
To qualify for a fellowship, students must have declared a major or be eligible to declare a major in physics, engineering, or other science, which requires mathematics at least through differential equations and junior level courses in modern physics/quantum mechanics and electricity and magnetism or equivalent courses in engineering sciences.
To apply, students must submit an application, which is
available through the Society of Physics Students at local
universities, the AAPM web site www.AAPM.org, and the AAPM Headquarters
(301-209-3350).
We expect there to be twelve fellowship awards in 2005, each carrying a $4,000 stipend provided by the AAPM. The
fellowship will cover a period of 10 weeks during the summer academic period (May 1 to September 30). The actual calendar
start and end dates may be arranged between the fellow and mentor to be at a mutually agreeable time.
Each student applicant receiving a fellowship will be assigned a mentor, who is a full member of the AAPM. A
mentor may be a medical physicist employed in a university environment, a hospital or other clinical facility, or the
radiological industry within the United States. These career medical physicists apply to be mentors on this program and
student applicants for the fellowship may make arrangements with a potential mentor prior to their application's
consideration. However these arrangements will not affect the fellow selection process. The mentor application is also
available from the AAPM web site or AAPM Headquarters. The Summer Undergraduate Fellowship Subcommittee selects mentors who meet the needs of the fellow in terms of the
mentor's geographic location and the fellow's interest in the offered research project or clinical experience. The
Subcommittee may evaluate the appropriateness of the project for junior or senior physics students, the available
laboratory and clinical facilities for the proposed project as well as any administrative support, e.g. housing, for the Fellow.
For a description of the 2004 program fellows and mentors, please read the article in the AAPM Newsletter (Nov/Dec
2004). For additional information on the 2005 program, you can view the AAPM web site
(http://www.aapm.org/announcements/summer_undergrad_fellow/).
If you have further questions, please contact the AAPM headquarters (301-209-3350).

This opportunity has been forwarded by Dr Gabor Fichtinger and below is his email regarding the internship opportunity.
Below is the announcement of a prestigious summer internship opportunity from AAPM. I am willing to serve as the mentor of a qualified undergraduate student in a medical physics project geared toward image-guided prostate cancer therapy. Let me know if there is interest. Application deadline is March 11.
Note for Students: usually, it takes several weeks to prepare a decent application, so you need to contact me ASAP, if you are interested. -- gaborGabor Fichtinger, Ph.D.
